Europe - Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is the second largest Canary Island, the least populated and the closest to the African continent with Morocco lying 60 miles to the east and Lanzarote 12 miles to the north. More than 150 splendid beaches, virtually constant sunshine plus a very relaxed and typically Spanish way of life, entice sun-worshipers and water sports fanatics (and beginners!) all year round.

Although originally densely wooded, the interior is now rather stark as European settlers cut down the timber for shipbuilding and thus reduced the vegetation. However, the island is blessed with miles and miles of lovely soft sands and it is this beautiful coastline that attracts visitors who seek isolation, tranquility and glorious beaches. Due to the effect of the Trade Winds, it can sometimes be windy which makes it a popular destination for avid wind-surfers and kite-flyers!

This leaf-shaped Canary Island can be geographically divided into two. In the south, the long narrow Jandia Peninsula is fringed on the eastern side with excellent beaches of pale sand stretching between the resorts of Costa Calma, Morro Jable and down to Punta de Jandia with its landmark lighthouse. The south's westerly (and windward) coast is fairly exposed and is suitable only for the hardiest of beach lovers. However, some of the island's best subtropical marine life can be found here making it very popular with divers.
